I know unschooling... What exactly is "Unschooling "?
Unschooling is a homeschool teaching style that is child lead based. This style does not follow a defined curriculum. The child will gain knowledge in everyday chores or opportunities.
When I taught in a childcare setting; I would follow the companies boxed curriculum. Box curriculum are various materials that aid teachers to implement lesson plans for a certain age group and length. This could be pre-planned lessons and or books for teachers to follow. The children were taught how to use the materials within the curriculum and also have a set outcome at the end of the day. Just like the curriculum for companies, the home curriculum can start to get expensive, fast.
I have not purchased any home curriculum and prices will vary from company to company.
Majority of the curriculum that is paid for provides services such as transcripts, attendance, help 24/7, and so much more.
The paid curriculum is a great way to start when you just don’t know where to begin. This will help many and give guidance on where your child is currently at with learning; most importantly this gives the parents peace of mind.
THIS IS THE GOOD STUFF
Unlike Boxed Curriculums. Unschooling can be structured and unstructured as well. Schedules are not of importance. The focus is on family dynamics and routines. Children can help with chores and still count toward learning objectives.
I do want to say, I homeschooled my son until grade K. That being said, I did not need to follow my state law for homeschooling. If you do decide to Un-school, follow your state requirements.
I do want to recommend keeping a portfolio to keep track of growth. This can be done with receipts from the library, and screenshots of Instagram activities.
Pretty much anything that shows proof of growth. As my family continues to homeschool in a non-traditional way. I will continue to update my blog.
There are tons of Facebook groups that help one another with tips and hacks.
